SPWAC and USF-Global Virus Network present
Half-Day International Conference
“Microbes Without Borders”
Dr. Robert Gallo, Director of the USF Health Virology Center, pioneered research on the role of viruses in human cancers and in 1984, co-discovered that HIV causes AIDS. Dr. Gallo will deliver the keynote address as global experts convene to consider the importance of microbes to human health.
Some pathogenic microbes, including viruses or bacteria, can cause pandemics — outbreaks of infectious disease that spread rapidly over a broad geographic area or across international borders.
Medical researchers and practitioners will discuss how pandemics can lead to large-scale deaths, devastate economies and financial markets, and threaten global security, and how policymakers can mitigate risks or prepare for them.
A second panel of internationally-renowned experts will present information on microbiomes and their impacts, especially on cancer and infectious diseases.
The conference will conclude with a networking luncheon for participants and ticket-holders.
